Electronic Portfolios

Beginning today, you are going to create an e-folio where you can document your accomplishments and talents. You will publish your e-folio on the Internet, so you will be able to demonstrate to colleges and/or employers your technology skills, as well as your accomplishments and talents. (You also have the option of creating your portfolio as a PowerPoint presentation and then enclosing a CD with your application.) I suggest working on a website. This way you always have access to your materials.

Step One:  Begin your free website. However, you must have an email account before you begin.

þ     Go to http://www.tripod.lycos.com

þ     Select “New Users:  sign up”

þ     Choose a member name. The first initial of your first name combined with your last name works well. Do not leave spaces. This member name becomes part of your website URL.

þ     Choose a password that you will remember. It may not be the same as your member name. Record your login and password (you will forget them)!!  Email them to yourself and save it.

þ     Complete the remainder of the page, filling in all requested information.

þ     Click on “Sign Me Up!”

þ     At this point, you will either see a confirmation message stating that your website has been created, or you will need to make corrections on your registration form. Scroll down the page, make the necessary corrections, and click on “Sign Me Up!” again.

þ     Click on “Build Your Homepage Now!”

þ     Click on “Site Builder.”

þ     Click on “Start Building” at the bottom of the page.

þ     Click on “Start from scratch with a blank site” at the top of the page.

þ     Select a design template that you like.

þ     Check “apply to all pages.” You can later play with the design to make changes.

þ     Give your site a name by clicking in the box under “Type a name for your site” and typing in a name. I suggest “***** *****’s Portfolio”

þ     At the bottom, click “add page”

þ     Enter a page title

þ     Check “Display on Navigation Bar”

þ     Click done

þ     Do this now for all the “possible” pages you may include on your website. Suggestions:

§         Home Page (purpose of site/add your "Goals" essay from Criterion)

§         About Me (autobiography to introduce yourself)

§         Academics (keep a record of courses, credits, and grades)

§         Artistic Work (add photos of art projects)

§         Best Work (essay? project?)

§         Certificates and Awards (list or add scanned copy)

§         Civic Involvement (list and explain)

§         Creative Writing or Poetry Page

§         Extracurricular Activities (list and explain; add photos; add stats)

§      Resume (do not include name, address, phone on the web site resume)

§         Special Interests and Hobbies (discuss them)

§         Talents

Step 2:     Now start collecting the work and creating the pages for your e-folio.

  • On your own computer or on your flash drive, you should create a file called “Portfolio Documents,” where you can also save copies of your resume, essays, scanned artwork, photos, etc. Have your photos, clip art, etc., in a special folder, so they will be readily available when you want to insert them in your e-folio.
  • Remember to add your essays from Criterion (http://criterion.ets.org) to your portfolio (About Me, Goals, etc.
  • If I am not available when you run into difficulties, email your question to me at dosmith@trenton.k12.nj.us

DIRECTIONS FOR CREATING A FREE WEBSITE FOR YOUR ELECTRONIC PORTFOLIO IF YOU CAN HANDLE IT ALONE:

·        Go to http://www.freewebs.com

·        Click Start Now

·        Fill in Create Your Account (Your user name will be part of your website address!!

·        Select a Template

·        Click Agree to Terms

·        Click Create My Site

·        Now you’re on your own.

·        However, if you're not computer literate and need guidance, you can create a free website at www.tripod.com.  IF you use tripod, I can help you with any questions you have because they are the host of my website (http://mrsdsmith.tripod.com) and my Master's portfolio.

·        Advantages of having a website are many.  Most importantly, you can document your high school career by posting essays, creative writings, photos of projects and artwork, etc.
